Fraunhofer AZOM

Fraunhofer Application Center for Optical Metrology and Surface Technologies (AZOM)

Fraunhofer AZOM unites regional economy requirements with novel research approaches in optical metrology, image processing, and bio-photonics. We focus on quickly and directly transferring research results into customized application solutions for industrial processes.

Research Services for Industry

Fraunhofer AZOM offers companies services indeveloping and testing industrial-suited optical measurement methods for various technology fields. It provides the interface between medical technology, automotive technology, mechanical engineering, and the semiconductor industry.

The range of services includes the characterization of almost all surface properties using state-of-the-art equipment of established manufacturers. In addition, Fraunhofer AZOM develops solutions for individual customer requirements that cannot be satisfactorily addressed with standard technology available on the market.

Service Portfolio

  • Optical metrology and process integration
  • Laser-based surface technologies

Technical Expertise

  • Photonic system components, fiber technologies and metrology
  • Surface and materials technologies
  • Image processing and process control

Educational Programs

The Fraunhofer AZOM Zwickau offers dedicated students in science and technology challenging tasks with responsibility and room for developing their own ideas.

Cooperation Partner

Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau

Leupold-Institut für Angewandte Naturwissenschaften (LIAN)

The Leupold Institute for Applied Natural Sciences combines three significant areas of natural and health sciences at the engineering level: biomedicine, chemistry, and physics.

The Optical Technologies Group at LIAN researches and develops state-of-the-art solutions for measurement technology issues in the automotive, semiconductor, medical engineering, and photonics industries. Prof. Peter Hartmann heads the group.

His professorship of experimental physiks/optical technologies mainly involves research using laser technology in materials processing and surface structuring, as well as special methods of optical metrology.
