Photonics and Optics

We develop solutions with light: The introduction of optical engineering into manufacturing technology is associated with enormous benefits in terms of accuracy, speed and cost efficiency. The innovative potential of lasers as a tool has revolutionized the automotive industry, aerospace, medical engineering and many other sectors. In combination with modern materials and systems technology, we process a wide variety of materials and surfaces, create new production systems and support their application in business, science and society.

Laser materials processing is one of the institute's core competencies: We develop processes and systems for laser welding, cutting, hardening, coating and structuring. We also implement our expertise and the many years of experience of our experts in the development of additive manufacturing processes, functional surfaces or in beam shaping. The accuracy advantages of lasers are also utilized in optical sensors and optical metrology. With the help of non-contact measuring instruments, surfaces can be measured and analyzed with precision down to the nanometer.
