Motivation

Controlled nuclear fusion is considered one of the most promising energy sources of the future – clean, safe, emission-free, and capable of providing baseload power. However, before visionary experiments can evolve into practical power plants, crucial technological challenges must still be addressed.

With SAXFUSION, Saxony is establishing its first state-wide competence network for fusion research. The consortium is led by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), which contributes decades of expertise in laser, plasma, and materials research.

Fraunhofer IWS plays a key role: transferring scientific knowledge into industrial applications. This is intended to give companies – especially small and medium-sized enterprises – early access to emerging markets related to fusion energy.

Get in touch and help shape the energy of the future with us.

SAXFUSION will support companies and research institutions in Saxony and beyond in positioning themselves early in the emerging market of fusion energy. In addition to energy technology, this will generate valuable momentum for other fields of application – from high-performance materials to precision optics and cross-cutting technological solutions for other industries.

We invite interested parties from research and industry to actively contribute to building a sustainable fusion economy – with innovative ideas, advanced technologies, and collaborative projects. Join us in shaping the future of fusion.

Objectives and Approach

Fraunhofer IWS combines its strengths in manufacturing technology, process engineering, and materials development to make fusion-relevant key components accessible to industrial partners.

The areas of focus are:

  • Target and component manufacturing
  • Surface and material processing for extreme thermal and radiation loads
  • Precision optics and laser-based processes for high-performance applications
  • Technology transfer into market-ready solutions and series production

Fraunhofer IWS works in close cooperation with research partners and industry – from start-ups to global technology companies. From within the network, new projects are initiated, complementary expertise is brought together, funding opportunities are actively pursued.

Innovation and Perspectives

Innovation emerges from the interplay between cutting-edge research and industrial implementation:

The HZDR, which is firmly established for years in international research with high-power lasers, plasma experiments, and material testing, is developing novel methods to generate, control, and study plasmas under realistic power plant conditions. This research, amongst many others,  provides the scientific foundation for the next generation of fusion facilities.

Fraunhofer IWS builds on this by transferring research results into industrial practice – with technologies for the precise manufacturing of fusion components, material processing for extreme loads, and the scaling of complex production processes.
