Fraunhofer IWS successfully completes first international summer school on laser processing

Press release (Nr. XIX) / 6.9.2012

The Fraunhofer IWS international summer school on laser application development was held in Dresden during the last week of August. The one week school focused on trends and new developments in the theory and practice of laser materials processing. Over 40 researchers from 13 countries including Spain, Italy, Great Britain, Lithuania, Finland and Switzerland attended the school which also provided a unique networking opportunity for attendees.

Dr. Andrés F. Lasagni (who was recently appointed as the new Professor for Laser Structuring in Manufacturing Technology at the Technische Universität Dresden) commented “Although there are many research institutes and companies in Germany working in the field of laser processing, there are hardly any international summer schools dealing with this topic currently”.

“The idea to begin this new initiative came out of discussions with Prof. Beyer (Director Fraunhofer IWS / Dean of the faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Technische Universität Dresden) where we felt it was important to be able to offer students the benefit of both theoretical and practical training in our state of the art laser facility. Young academics were able to conduct their own experiments using the extensive facilities of IWS together with guidance from experienced IWS laser experts.

Students were able to get a good introduction to laser processing technology and also to explore the sights of Dresden whilst networking with their colleagues.

Fraunhofer IWS and the Technische Universität Dresden plan to offer the summer school again next year and anyone interested in attending should contact Prof. Dr. Andrés F. Lasagni.
