The Fraunhofer Research Institution for Battery Cell Production FFB is being set up as part of the "FoFeBat" project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The aim of the project is to establish a central research infrastructure to enable industry to produce battery cells economically and ecologically. Fraunhofer FFB is intended to accelerate the innovation and commercialization process of production technologies for existing and future cell formats. The focus is on gaining experience in the operation of large-scale research manufacturing in order to expand competencies and close gaps in this field.

Fraunhofer IWS contributes to the project with the design of an assembly line in FoFeBat 2 and the development of an innovation module for dry coating of battery electrodes in FoFeBat 3.
