Was uns antreibt What Drives Us Neue Werkstoffe, Laserprozesse und digitale Systeme verändern die industrielle Produktion. Unsere Technologiefelder | Our Technology Fields Dünnschichttechnik Thin-film Technology Functionalized surfaces provide unique properties for indus- trial applications: wear resistance, low friction, corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, or optical reflectivity. In the field of Thin-film Technologies, physical vapor deposi- tion (PVD) methods, including sputtering, vacuum-arc deposition, and evaporation, create coatings and deposition sources for a wide range of applications. The spectrum ranges from low-friction, wear-reducing carbon and hard- material coatings for tribological components to corrosion- stable alloy barriers and electrochemically stable conductive electrode layers, as well as nanometer-scale multilayers for VIS, EUV, and X-ray optics. Based on long-standing expe- rience and scientific expertise, Fraunhofer IWS develops coating systems and technologies ready for industrial use. Method development for coating characterization, in-house measurement techniques such as non-destructive acoustic surface-wave spectroscopy, and plasma-process simulation complement the research and development offering. Funktionalisierte Oberflächen mit einzigartigen Eigen- schaften für die Industrie: verschleißfest, reibungs- und korrosionsarm, elektrisch leitend oder optisch reflektierend. Unsere Technologiefelder | Our Technology Fields Die Batterien der Zukunft entwickeln – darauf richtet das Technologiefeld Batterietechnik seinen Forschungsfokus und erarbeitet neue Konzepte für die gesamte Prozess- kette der Batterieentwicklung. Wir erforschen effiziente sowie kosten- und ressourcensparende Produktionsprozesse zur Herstellung der Zellkomponenten und den Aufbau von Batteriezellen. Einen Forschungs- und Entwicklungsschwer- punkt stellen neuartige Beschichtungsverfahren dar. Das am Fraunhofer IWS entwickelte Trockenbeschichtungsverfahren »Dry Transfer Electrode Coating« (DRYtraec®) ermöglicht zum Beispiel die lösungsmittelfreie, umweltfreundliche sowie kosteneffiziente Herstellung von Batterieelektroden. Neben der etablierten Lithium-Ionen-Technologie werden auch die Grundlagen für ultraleichte Lithium-Schwefel- und Fest- körperbatterien mit erhöhter Energiedichte erarbeitet. Vor diesem Hintergrund entwickelt ein interdisziplinäres Team aus Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaften Batteriezellen der nächsten Generation – vom Material bis zur Prototypzelle. Developing the batteries of the future and exploring new concepts for the entire battery development process chain – this is what defines our research in the field of battery development. We focus on efficient as well as cost- and resource-saving production processes for the manufacturing of cell components and the assembly of battery cells. Research and development is centered around novel coating processes. For example, the patent- ed ”dry transfer electrode coating” (DRYtraec) process developed at Fraunhofer IWS enables solvent-free, envi- ronmentally friendly, as well as cost-efficient production of battery electrodes. In addition to the established lithi- um-ion technology, we develop the foundations for ultra- light lithium-sulfur and solid-state batteries with higher energy density. An interdisciplinary team from various natural and engineering sciences develops next-gener- ation battery cells – from materials to prototype cells. 9
Unsere Technologiefelder | Our Technology Fields Additive Fertigung und Oberflächentechnik Additive Manufacturing and Surface Technology The Additive Manufacturing and Surface Technology field leverages extensive expertise in the application and devel- opment of novel materials and surfaces – from material build-up and engineering of proceses and systems to com- ponent finishing and digital integration. Thermal surface engineering develops and investigates state-of-the-art process and system technologies for laser-assisted coating methods. Additional focal areas include laser rolling and direct plating, as well as heat treatment, with an emphasis on high-precision case-hardening techniques, the introduc- tion of compressive residual stresses through shock peening, and processes such as tempering, nitriding, and alloying. Generative manufacturing and component printing also rank among the core competencies of this technology field. Large-scale components with complex geometries are pro- duced layer by layer from aluminum, titanium, nickel, iron, copper, and other metallic materials, using powder and wire feedstocks. Flexible, large-scale, 3D-capable systems for laser metal deposition and wire arc manufacturing enable this pro- duction. Fraunhofer IWS' LPBF and DED systems rank among the largest additive manufacturing facilities in Europe for pro- cessing powders and wires. Through tailored system design, the teams deliver reliable components with new function- alities. Beyond these activities, the researchers transfer their expertise to micro- and biosystems engineering, model and miniaturize physiological systems, and use them to develop integrated solutions – drawing on artificial intelligence as well. Das Technologiefeld Additive Fertigung und Oberflächen- technik nutzt umfangreiches Wissen für den Einsatz und die Entwicklung neuartiger Werkstoffe und Oberflächen: vom Aufbau der Materialien über die Prozess- und Systemtechnik- entwicklung bis hin zur Veredelung der Bauteile und ihrer digitalen Integration. Die thermische Oberflächentechnik ent- wickelt und erforscht modernste Prozess- und Systemtechnik für lasergestützte Beschichtungsverfahren. Weitere Schwer- punkte bilden das Laserwalz- und Direktplattieren sowie die Wärmebehandlung mit Fokus auf hochpräzise Randschicht- härteverfahren, Einbringung von Druckeigenspannungen mittels Shock Peening oder auch Verfahren zum Anlassen, Nitrieren und Legieren. Auch die generative Fertigung und das Drucken von Bauteilen zählen zu den zentralen Kompeten- zen des Technologiefelds. Großbauteile mit komplexer Geo- metrie entstehen in Schichten aus Aluminium, Titan, Nickel, Eisen, Kupfer sowie anderen metallischen Werkstoffen aus Pulver und Draht. Flexible, 3D-fähige Großanlagen für das Laserauftragschweißen und die Drahtlichtbogenfertigung ermöglichen diese Fertigung. Die vorhandenen LPBF- und DED-Systeme zählen zu den größten additiven Fertigungs- anlagen in Europa für die Verarbeitung von Pulvern und Drähten. So entstehen dank maßgeschneiderter Auslegung zuverlässige Komponenten mit neuen Funktionalitäten. Die Forschenden übertragen ihr Know-how darüber hinaus auf die Mikro- und Biosystemtechnik, modellieren und miniaturisieren physiologische Systeme und entwickeln daraus integrierte Lösungen – auch unter Nutzung künstlicher Intelligenz. Unsere Technologiefelder | Our Technology Fields Trennen und Fügen Cutting and Joining The Cutting and Joining technology field develops and researches advanced manufacturing technologies. Its work focuses on joining, material removal, and separa- tion processes, as well as on surface and material modi- fication methods using industrial lasers. This technology field develops complex processes for all industrial sectors, including electromobility, aerospace, and mechanical and plant engineering. Simulation and design support and complement the experimental work, holistically and sys- tematically linking the laser process to the component. Systems engineering integrates processes, simulations, materials, and lasers. It includes specialized beam guidance systems and customer-specific control solutions for laser processes. Researchers increasingly integrate AI-based algo- rithms for data acquisition and process control. A modern IT infrastructure, industrial lasers across all power classes, and extensively equipped laboratories support this work. Sein inhaltlicher Schwerpunkt liegt auf Füge-, Abtrage- und Trennprozessen sowie Verfahren zu Oberflächen- und Werkstoffmodifikationen auf Basis von Industrielasern. Das Technologiefeld entwickelt komplexe Prozesse für alle Industriebranchen, etwa in der Elektromobilität, der Luft- und Raumfahrt sowie im Maschinen- und Anlagenbau. Simulation und Auslegung unterstützen und ergänzen die experimentellen Arbeiten ganzheitlich und verbin- den den Laserprozess systematisch mit dem Bauteil. Die System- technik verknüpft Prozess, Simulation, Werkstoff und Laser. Sie umfasst unter anderem spezielle Strahlführungen sowie kun- denspezifische Steuerungslösungen für Laserprozesse. Zuneh- mend integrieren die Forschenden KI-basierte Algorithmen zur Datenerfassung und Prozessregelung. Für diese Arbeiten stehen eine moderne IT-Infrastruktur, Industrielaser jeder Leistungs- klasse sowie umfangreich ausgestattete Labore zur Verfügung. 12

Unsere Technologiefelder | Our Technology Fields Werkstoffcharakterisierung und -prüfung Materials Characterization and Testing The Materials Characterization and Testing competence field researches, develops, and evaluates innovative materials and material systems. Its focus lies on the precise determi- nation of mechanical properties and structural character- istics of materials as well as their modification through manufacturing processes. State-of-the-art testing and analysis technologies enable researchers to rapidly identify meaningful correlations between process, structure, and properties. Especially in fatigue and cyclic strength, they obtain reliable results within just a few days. This accelerat- ed and cost-efficient short-term diagnostics approach opens up new potential for faster and data-driven innovation cycles, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises. In the development of novel high-performance materials for extreme operating conditions, rapid material screen- ing allows for shorter development times and provides the foundation for resource-saving material utilization. In this way, the competence field contributes to longer product lifetimes, more efficient processes, and a sus- tainable, competitive industrial landscape in Germany. Das Kompetenzfeld Werkstoffcharakterisierung und -prüfung erforscht, entwickelt und bewertet innovative Materialien und Werkstoffsysteme. Die präzise Erfassung mechani- scher Eigenschaften und struktureller Beschaffenheiten von Werkstoffen sowie deren Beeinflussung durch Fertigungs- prozesse bilden die Kernelemente der Arbeit in diesem Feld. Neueste Prüf- und Analysetechnologien ermöglichen es, in kürzester Zeit aussagekräftige Zusammenhänge zwischen Prozess, Struktur und Eigenschaften zu gewinnen. Beson- ders bei Ermüdung und Schwingfestigkeit können bereits nach wenigen Tagen belastbare Ergebnisse entstehen. Die zeitsparende und kosteneffiziente Kurzzeitdiagnostik eröff- net insbesondere kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen neue Potenziale für schnellere und datengetriebene Innovations- zyklen. In der Entwicklung neuartiger Hochleistungswerk- stoffe für extreme Einsatzbedingungen ermöglicht ein schnelles Materialscreening verkürzte Entwicklungszeiten und bildet die Basis für einen ressourcenschonenden Werk- stoffeinsatz. Unsere Technologiefelder | Our Technology Fields Optische Messtechnik Optical Metrology Developing innovative concepts for optical metrology, surface characterization, image processing, and process control: Modern laboratories have a wide range of different instruments for this purpose, with which measurement and processing services are carried out on behalf of customers. We further develop standard procedures for hardware and software for use in an industrial environment and open up new application possibilities in integration. We also focus on developing and evalu- ating innovative measurement and laser processes for the automotive and semi- conductor industries, as well as medical engineering and mechanical engineering. Behind this is a research facility that builds a bridge between industry, education and applied science: In cooperation with Westsächsische Hochschule Zwickau (WHZ), Fraunhofer IWS operates the Fraunhofer Application Center for Opti- cal Metrology and Surface Technologies AZOM. With its connection to WHZ, Fraunhofer AZOM is strongly committed to training technical engineers. The Zwickau site offers students the opportunity to work on industry-related research topics. Neuartige Konzepte für optische Messtechnik, Oberflächencharakteri sierung, Bildverarbeit- ung und Prozesskontrolle entwickeln: Dafür steht in modernen Laboren eine Vielzahl unterschiedlichster Instrumente zur Verfü- gung, mit denen im Kundenauftrag Mess- und Bearbeitungsdienstleistungen erfolgen. Standard verfahren entwickeln wir sowohl hard- als auch softwaretechnisch für den Einsatz im industriellen Umfeld weiter und eröffnen neue Anwendungsmöglichkeiten in der Integration. Weitere Schwerpunkte liegen in der Entwicklung und Evaluierung innova- tiver Mess- und Laserverfahren für die Auto- mobil- und Halbleiterindustrie, der Medizin- technik sowie dem Maschinenbau. Dahinter steckt eine Forschungseinrichtung, die eine Brücke zwischen Industrie, Ausbildung und angewandter Wissenschaft schlägt: In Zusam- menarbeit mit der Westsächsischen Hoch- schule Zwickau (WHZ) betreibt das Fraunhofer IWS das Fraunhofer Anwen dungszentrum für Optische Messtechnik und Oberflächen- technologien AZOM. Mit der Anbindung an die WHZ engagiert sich das Fraunhofer AZOM stark in der Ausbildung technischer Ingenieure. The institutes com- bine complementary skills in the following areas: laser manufacturing techniques, laser beam sources, metrology, medicine and life sciences, optical systems and optics man- ufacturing, EUV technology, process and system simulation, materials technology, microtechnologies and nanotechnologies, thin-film, and plasma and electron beam technology. Thanks to the extensive know- how of the institutes, customized laser- and process-specific solutions can be imple- mented including materials, product design, construction, means of production, and quality assurance. Fraunhofer USA Center Midwest (CMW) Fraunhofer USA Center Midwest (CMW) offers a comprehensive range of services in process development, design, and construction of equipment and components, prototyping, quality assurance, consulting, and training. The center’s research focuses on surface technologies, thin-film coatings, diamond materials, additive manufacturing, and laser applications. With state-of-the-art laboratories at two locations in Michigan, and a close collaboration with Michigan State University, Fraunhofer CMW develops pioneering technological solutions and transfers them into market-ready applica- tions – from the micro to the macro scale.
