Forming shoulder coated with CrN

Forming shoulders are used for the production of food packagings made of plastic foils. These smooth foils are shaped into a tubular form by a forming shoulder in a continuous process. The tube-like forms are welded to packing bags in subsequent process steps.

The forming shoulders are exposed to increased wear in certain areas (such as collar edge). After a certain period of time they cannot be used anymore.


Solution

Wear protection coatings of hard materials can contribute to a significantly prolonged life of tools and machine parts.
Potential coating systems are, e.g., standard hard materials such as TiN, CrN, TiAlN and other nitrides, but also Diamor ® coatings (hard amorphous, hydrogen-free carbon).
They provide excellent wear protection, only a few micrometers thick and, moreover, the dimensional accuracy of the coated parts is hardly affected.
These layers are applied to the components by means of PVD processes. (physical vapor deposition).

Results

The coating significantly increases the operational life time of the forming shoulder. In addition, adjusted friction properties of the forming shoulder can be set versus the foil.
