THz radiation penetrates various materials without almost any attenuation. In contrast to other wavelength areas such as infrared or visible spectral ranges THz radiation is able to reach deeper areas. The technique THz-TDS (time domain spectroscopy) utilizes short electro magnetical pulses, included in Thz frequencies in broadband mode. Thus it is possible to perform tomographic as well as spectroscopic analyses. Compared to cell phone radiation, these devices have much less radiation and together with the lower photon energy of THz radiation, do not influence the material and thus operate completely non-destructively.


System characteristics

  • spectral range: 0.1 - 2.7 THz
  • measuring rate: < 40 Hz

  • mobile device for on-site application, outside the laboratory


Applications

  • tomographic analyses: tomographic information are obtained by transit time measurements of reflected THz pulses during THz time domain spectroscopy
  • substance identification by means of spectra analysis of transmitted or reflected THz radiation
  • moisture measurements e.g.,by detection of signal changes during drying processes
  • thickness measurements of lacquer layers by analyzing the transit time of reflected THz pulses
