Cutting speed

Laser cutting is an industrial technology, implemented 20 years ago, and which now receives more and more attention because of the high quality and efficiency results, due to the improved availability of solid state lasers.

The usage of fiber and disk lasers enables very high processing speeds, especially in the case of thin sheets. The group “high speed laser processing” develops concepts to improve the dynamic increase of laser cutting systems.

Hitherto, compared to a solid-state laser, CO2 lasers deliver better results for the cutting of thin sheets of 5 mm thickness, considering roughness and burr formation.

Therefore, research projects, mainly investigating the basis process understanding, aim at a deepening of this understanding, whereas industrial projects focus on the possibility to improve cutting qualities and to increase process parameters.

Video: Systems development for high dynamic laser fusion cutting

Fraunhofer IWS develops technologies and system solutions to overcome the limitations in thin sheet laser cutting on complex contours. The key points for tailored application and customer-adapted solutions are: lightweight design, optimized cutting parameters and perfect combined dynamic settings. The video shows a customized solution for high dynamic fusion cutting at 40 mm by 40 mm working field.
