For process and basic investigations, the IWS has a broad variety of different methods to characterize the processing results. Apart from roughness measurements of the cutting edge, the IWS has a well equipped metallographic lab, a REM and TEM for detailed investigations of cutting edge structures.

Furthermore, it is possible to determine the magnetical properties of laser cut electrical sheets.

In close cooperation with the TU Dresden the group “high speed laser processing” has the possibility to characterize the cutting process via high speed images, streak measurements, PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) and spectroscopical measurements.

Additionally the IWS has excellent expertise in process simulations. In the case of laser cutting, the simulation comprises gas flows and heat conduction within the heat affected zone. Within a basic research project the simulation deals with the shaping of molten material.
