Save fuel and lubricants- Fraunhofer IWS Dresden at the Hannover Industry Fair 2009

Press release (Nr. VI) /

With the technology of the laser controlled vacuum arc (Laser-Arco), developed at the Fraunhofer IWS Dresden, it is possible to fabricate a new generation of diamond-like amorphous carbon films. Their hardness is three times higher than that of the hitherto available films. They achieve lowest frictions even without any lubricants!!!

Diamor® coated piston pins for motor applications

If motor components, such as piston rings, piston pins, bucket tappets, already coated with the diamond-like amorphous carbon films, are coated with the latest novel Dia-mor films, even further fuel savings will become possible. Due to the coatings of the fuel injection systems with the new Diamor films we could even realize injection pres-sures of more than 2000 bar and thus the CO2 emission could be reduced even once again.

The Laser-Arc module (LAM) for the deposition of such films can be flanged on every commercial coating system instead of a classical evaporation source. Furthermore it can be integrated into their control. The module could prove itself already in its first industrial application in a serial production. The current research focuses at coatings and the technical testing of motor and drive components as well as at the optimization of the coating technology.
