Superlubricity banishes friction from engines and moves elephants

Teaching builds spirits & practice makes perfect – Training as materials tester at Fraunhofer IWS

What does a materials tester do? How does the training work? Where and when do I have to apply if I am interested?  You will learn all this from Fraunhofer IWS trainers who will be waiting for you on site together with the BSZ Freital.

How a coating can reduce particulate matter

Brake discs are coated to reduce particulate matter. How does it work? Take a look in our lab! Our experts explain how it works to save particulate matter by coating brake discs.

Research for the energy transition – hydrogen

With wind turbines and hydrogen cars, our scientists illustrate the energy paths to the fuel cell. If you would like to find out more about the state of research on hydrogen, simply visit Fraunhofer IWS.

Can the elephant slide without ice? – The superlubricious coatings of Fraunhofer IWS

Experts speak of "superlubricity" when the friction coefficient falls below 0.01. A person could push a five-ton elephant standing on a super-lubricated plate effortlessly. "Ultralubrication" can halve friction losses in internal combustion engines compared with the current state of the art.

Learning process technology: AI algorithms in micro-laser processing

Artificial intelligence is on everyone's lips, but what does it actually mean for industry? How quickly can it be integrated into machines and how can this be realized? Our laser micromachining experts will answer all these and other questions in their laser lab.

Modern lightweight structures for steel, bridge and aircraft construction by resource-saving laser-beam welding

In our laser hall, a model of a crane boom will be set up near the large XXl-laser welding system. Our laser welding specialists will use this example to explain you, how it is possible to design and manufacture lightweight structures in such a way that they can nevertheless withstand "heavy" applications in bridge and aircraft construction - and also under resource-saving aspects.
