Deposited thin films (solid electrolytes) of varying sizes

Applications

  • smartcards
  • Radio Frequency Identification Devices, RFID’s
  • autonomous sensor-systems and networks
  • thin-film-batteries for medical applications (e.g. cardiac pacemakers, active micro-pills)
  • microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), lab-on-a-chip
  • mobile electronic devices (mobile phones, tablets, laptops, digital cameras, mp3-player)

Advantages

  • non-flammable solid electrolytes, high intrinsic safety-level
  • environment-friendly operation
  • possible integration into micro systems due to small size
  • absent passivation of the electrodes surface (no liquid electrolyte involved), higher battery cycling lifetime
  • increased specific capacity and energy density by using multivalent ions as charge carriers
  • further enhancement of characteristic electrochemical performance possible by creating 3D-systems
  • charging can occur even at electrical currents as low as 100 nA
  • continuous discharge even at high temperatures (small internal electric resistance)
  • parallel- and series connection of cells for yielding higher electrical voltage/ currents
  • low production costs by substituting expensive and determinate available raw materials like Li, Co, Ge
